John 14:16, 18
…. I will pray to the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter,
that He may abide with you forever; I will not leave you comfortless; I will
come to you.
Who is the Comforter? The Comforter is
the Holy Spirit who was to come and abide with all believers after Christ's
return to heaven. Jesus was speaking to His disciples as He was preparing them
for His departure and was making provisions so that there would be someone
there to provide the help that would be needed as they proclaimed the gospel
message. The help was the Holy Spirit who Jesus called another comforter,
because He was the comforter then.
The
principle of needing a comforter is true for all believers today as we sojourn
this life as there will be times when we will need a listening ear, a shoulder
to lean on, and a present help in the time of trouble. Verse 18 drives home the
point of Jesus' love for His people, which states "I will not leave you
comfortless; I will come to you". He will and does every time. What
a mighty God!
Isn't
it comforting to know we can call on the Lord anytime day or night and He is
there providing the comfort and cheer that is needed? God promised to provide
for all our needs both physical and spiritual. A promise made, a promise kept.
The
Comforter-the Holy Spirit is always present.
